Canada has taken another step toward making its citizens defenseless. Canada is continuing its long-standing push to restrict gun ownership. On Thursday, the government announced a ban on more firearms, bringing the total to 324, following a 2020 ban on more than 1,500 assault rifles. The new laws, for example, prohibit the purchase and sale of handguns by private individuals and require existing guns to be turned in to the government under a buy-back program. The move was motivated by an effort to reduce gun violence, which is on the rise in the country. The new restrictions apply mostly to modern sporting and hunting weapons, requiring owners to surrender or deactivate their weapons.
The government is apparently afraid of its citizens and wants to disarm them
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the move necessary to increase security in a country facing a surge in gun violence. However, the opposition, especially the conservative parties, criticize this step as ineffective against illegal possession of weapons and claim that it mainly affects legal holders. Interestingly, the government is considering donating surrendered weapons to Ukraine.
Canada thus continues its policy of gradual regulation of firearms, which is among the strictest in the world, similar to Great Britain and Australia.
Many consider this step to be closer to a totalitarian state that has its citizens fully under control and they have no way to defend themselves.
