Scientists affiliated with the World Economic Forum (WEF) are pushing a chilling proposal: to grow human bodies in artificial wombs to serve as a source of organs and experimental tools.
This radical vision, blending science fiction with reality, aims to create so-called “bodyoids” for medical use—and beyond.
The plan, led by researchers Carsten T. Charlesworth, Henry T. Greely, and Hiromitsu Nakauchi, was reported in the MIT Technology Review and outlines a future where these laboratory entities could transform medicine.
Designed to withstand relentless pain, the bodyoids would act as living test beds for new drugs and as incubators for transplantable human organs.
The scientists say their Frankenstein-like creation could solve pressing medical problems, from organ shortages to risky drug trials.
Yet the idea of producing these terrifying zombie-like humanoids—even called “meat” in the trade—has sparked a furious debate about the ethical limits of bioengineering.
The plan would be made possible by using pluripotent stem cells, one of the first types of cells to form during human evolution.
Stem cells have already been used to grow organic matter and most recently helped successfully create a structure that resembles a human embryo.
Scientists hope to grow fetuses entirely outside the body in artificial wombs, which are already being tested in laboratories. They plan to use genetic techniques to stop brain production and ensure that the body lacks sentience.
“Once grown, the bodies could address many ethical issues in modern medicine and offer ways to avoid unnecessary pain and suffering,” the researchers wrote.
One such issue, the scientists say, is sourcing “ethical meat.”
They wrote: “For example, we could offer an ethical alternative to the way we currently use animals for research and food, providing meat or other products without animal suffering or awareness.”
The researchers admitted that their plan raises endless ethical questions, but they highlighted the world of possibilities that could open up if replacement bodies are developed.
They pointed out how medical researchers rely primarily on animals for testing, which is not always directly beneficial for treating people.
Furthermore, testing potentially tortures living creatures because animals are sentient and feel pain. According to the researchers, endless drugs are being tested all the time, but very few of them are approved for safe use in humans.
That’s because drugs must be tested on live people in clinical trials, which risk harming patients and can take a decade or more to complete.
Only about 15% of these trials are actually successfully completed, the researchers said.
The researchers pointed to the more than 100,000 Americans currently waiting for organ transplants and stressed that the crisis is not going away anytime soon.
They also noted that medical students rely on people to donate their bodies to science for essential training.
At the end of the bizarre essay, the scientists desperately pleaded for the method to be tested on rodents as soon as possible.
They said, “Until recently, the idea of creating something like a bodyoid was relegated to the realms of science fiction and philosophical speculation. But now it is at least plausible—and perhaps revolutionary. It is time to explore it.”
