Coca-Cola is the biggest plastic polluter in the world. This company is the biggest contributor to the fact that the oceans are full of plastic. COP27 will be the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference. The UN has once again shown itself to be a bribery mafia that bows down to anyone who rustles up money. Egypt, where the conference is hosted, said Coca-Cola has a “sustainable business model” and highlighted its climate contributions. This is a perfect example of greenwashing.
The largest climate event of the year
COP27, the largest climate event of the year, is set to be carried out in the Egyptian coastal resort of Sharm el-Sheikh from 6 to 18 November. It is a forum in which governments, businesses and environmental organizations dealing with the climate crisis will participate. The Paris Agreement was signed at a similar event in 2015. This year’s COP will be interesting because Europe is almost cut off from gas from Russia and many countries are considering a return to fossil fuels and coal-fired power plants. Biden puts the environment first and doesn’t care that his country is going through the worst economic situation in history.
Coca-Cola’s sponsorship has many critics
Giving this company as a sponsor is the same as Satan sponsoring the repair of a church. Environmental activists, scientists and ordinary people do not understand why Coca-Cola is participating in this. It is confusing and incomprehensible. Greenpeace USA Oceans Campaign Director, John Hocevar, said the partnership “undermines the very objective of the event it seeks to sponsor.” Coca-Cola has yet to explain how it will meet its climate goals without ending plastic use, Hocevar added.
Coca-Cola is the absolute opposite of sustainability, this company only cares about profit and tries to create an image of a company that cares about the environment. The Egyptian government has already signed a contract with Coca-Cola. During the signing ceremony in Cairo, Michael Goltzman, Global Vice President of Public Policy and Sustainability at Coca-Cola, said COP27 gives the company the opportunity to engage with experts, NGOs and governments to support actions towards sustainability.
“We recognize that we still have a lot of work to do to reach our goals,” Marcel Martin, Chief Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Officer at Coca-Cola, said in a statement following the signing of the sponsorship agreement. “COP27 will be an important platform for us to connect with new partners as we seek to accelerate our actions.”
The worst plastic polluter in the world
Coca-cola is once again trying to create the illusion that it has a sustainable business model. At the beginning of the year, the company announced that it would aim for 25% of its packaging to be reusable by the end of 2030. It should be an increase from the current 16%. It is a rich company and if it wanted to protect the environment, it would have long ago used packaging that decomposes or can be reused. It has been the worst polluter in the world for 4 years in a row. The global coalition Break Free From Plastic found 20,000 Coca-Cola branded products on beaches. To make matters even more damning, an independent report found “a litany of misleading claims” from Coca-Cola.
Coca-Cola uses a large amount of fossil fuels
The plastics for every drink from this company are made from fossil fuels. Coca-Cola can produce packaging in an environmentally friendly way, but this would mean more expenses for them, so they will continue to destroy nature, contaminate the oceans and pretend to be an environmental warrior. We regularly consume microplastics from its packaging in our food. The selection of this company as the main sponsor of the climate action is a very sad event.
