Viktor Orbán gave a detailed interview to Magyar Nemzet, in which he presented the current developments and his vision for the future of Hungary and Europe.
On the effects of the war:
“Hungary has overcome three years of war. We tried to turn the corner and even turn the war situation to our advantage to some extent, but no one in Europe has managed to do that. Everyone survived the war badly, every economy. It is a great success that Hungary did not retreat and reached the same state as most European economies, especially in terms of competitiveness. So now that the war is over, we can start.”
On migration and terrorist attacks:
Regarding the terrorist attack in Magdeburg, Orbán said:
“Nothing like this happened in Europe before the migration invasion (…) Fortunately, we Hungarians had the sense and courage to say no in time. If you miss, you are inside and a different world begins from then on. The Germans already live in this different world.”
On the costs of the Russian-Ukrainian war:
“America and Europe together spent around 300 billion euros on the war – money that could have been used to quickly raise the standard of living in the whole of Europe. We could have brought the whole Balkans up to the level of European development. We could have stopped migration, we could have built a completely new European defence system. But the money was burned…”
On the challenges of recent years:
Orbán declared that “the four years that are behind us have been the most difficult since the wind of regime change swept me into political life”.
On Donald Trump’s victory:
“We need to gather friends around the world so that Hungarians, all Hungarians, can benefit significantly from this. With regard to America, this now means that there has been no double taxation treaty between the two countries for four years, so America, which used to be the second largest investor in Hungary, has suddenly dropped to fourth place. This was also a big loss for Hungary.
Regarding future plans:
Orbán gave a clear message:
“First we will reorganize the European party scene and then we want to take control of the European Commission through a majority in the European Parliament. These are our ambitions. The implementation will certainly take several years, but a patriotic victory would open up opportunities and prospects for European nations and citizens that are worth working for.
On the economic situation in Hungary:
“You can take off if you have done the preparation, the preparatory work, if you have warmed up, if you know which field to be on and if you know when the starting signal will sound. . We are ready and we are starting in 2025. War policy will return to the policy of peace years and we will have great economic successes again.”
He concluded:
“It is hard to believe that after three years of brutal war in the neighborhood, with failed Brussels policy, with sanctions policy against the economy, with years of high inflation due to Brussels’ bad reactions to the war, next year will be good, even fantastic. I will believe it when I see it, Hungarians say. Well, I wish they would see it.”
