The latest report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) reveals that 41% of companies worldwide plan to reduce their workforces as AI increasingly automates tasks. But while the report lags behind the rapid development, experts estimate that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could be a reality by mid-2025. Patrick Wood, editor, warns that by 2030, almost all companies worldwide will be affected by this development.
AI as a job threat and a driver of reskilling
A WEF survey of hundreds of large companies found that 77% of companies plan to reskill their existing employees to work better with AI between 2025 and 2030. However, unlike previous reports, the current Future of Jobs report no longer emphasizes that new technologies such as AI could lead to a “net gain” in jobs.
The impact of generative AI on the job market
Saadia Zahidi, CEO of the WEF, highlighted the role of generative AI, which can generate text, images and content based on user preferences, in transforming industries and work tasks. Occupations such as postal workers, executive secretaries and payroll clerks could be particularly affected by AI automation. Graphic designers and assistants also come just outside the top 10 occupations with the biggest declines – a clear sign that AI is increasingly taking hold in knowledge work.
Growing demand for AI skills
As AI displaces some professions, the demand for specific AI skills is growing rapidly. Nearly 70% of companies plan to hire new employees who can develop AI tools, and 62% want to hire workers who can better collaborate with AI.
Optimistic outlook despite AI threat
The WEF report still sees potential in human-machine collaboration. AI could “augment” human capabilities rather than completely replace them, especially since human skills remain essential.
AI-related layoffs have already occurred
However, the impact of AI on jobs is already being felt. Tech companies such as Dropbox and Duolingo have cited AI as a reason for layoffs in recent years. The reality is that the change has already begun – with drastic consequences for many workers around the world.
