Study: Mortality rate six times higher after pandemic – older people are particularly affected

Hong Kong’s Unexplained Death Wave – New Study Shows Dramatic Rise in Mortality Despite High Vaccination Rates

In the supposedly “post-pandemic” phase, Hong Kong is experiencing demographic developments that experts are concerned about. A new study published in the prestigious journal The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific shows that mortality rates in Hong Kong are set to rise significantly by 2024 – and this in one of the most vaccinated populations in the world. The data raises explosive questions that remain unanswered.

Six-fold excess mortality after the pandemic officially ended

The retrospective analysis is based on more than a decade of mortality data (2013–2024) and was conducted by a research team led by Dr. Kehang Li of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Particularly explosive: The age-adjusted excess mortality rate in the post-pandemic phase (2023-2024) was six times higher than in the pre-pandemic period. People over 80 were the most affected – with more than 530 deaths per 100,000 people. However, there was also a noticeable increase in deaths among people under 65 – mainly due to heart disease, stroke and even injuries.

High vaccination rate – but no return to normal

By the end of 2022, over 80% of Hong Kong’s population had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and this figure is now over 90%. Despite this – or is this why? – the mortality rate remained significantly elevated even years after the pandemic officially ended. There has been no return to baseline mortality levels. The authors attribute the continued excess mortality to “post-viral complications” and disruptions in care, but explicitly deny finding direct evidence of deaths from COVID itself.

Pneumonia is deadlier than COVID-19

Another notable finding: The most common cause of death from respiratory disease was not COVID-19, but classical pneumonia. Especially in the elderly, bacterial or viral pneumonia continued to be deadlier than SARS-CoV-2 itself. This raises questions about the effectiveness of pandemic policy—especially given the massive shift of resources to COVID-specific measures.

Cardiac deaths in young adults: an underestimated epidemic?

The main concern is the increase in deaths from cardiovascular disease and sudden cardiac death in people under 65. The number of deaths due to injuries has also increased. The authors mention this development, but avoid any mention of possible side effects of vaccines. Other studies that have linked mRNA vaccines to myocarditis and other cardiovascular complications are not discussed.

A big gap: no investigation into possible causes of vaccination

Given the dramatic excess mortality in a population with near-universal vaccination, the obvious question arises: What role did the vaccines themselves play? This analysis is nowhere to be found in the study. Instead, the authors limit themselves to systemic explanations: psychosocial stress, interrupted therapies, hospital overcrowding. Whether these reasons alone can explain the high number of additional deaths remains open—and is not convincingly explained in the text.

Alarming data findings, many unanswered questions

A new study in the journal Lancet reveals disturbing figures that challenge the myth of a successfully defeated pandemic. Despite high vaccination rates and the officially ended pandemic, the number of deaths is increasing – not due to infections, but due to other, sometimes unexpected, causes. But instead of critically examining the possible consequences of vaccination, the analysis stays in safe waters and systematically ignores a key aspect. Serious scientific and social analysis is still waiting to be carried out.
