Rickshaw pullers have a very physically demanding job. In today’s civilized era, it is said that this is inhumane. Modern intelligent solar rickshaws were introduced at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) campus. Indian students have been able to combine modern technology with traditional transport. Using renewable sources – that is, solar energy, they have increased comfort for rickshaw drivers.

Government Initiative

Solar rickshaws were manufactured by a non-governmental organization (NGO) Sukoon Solutions, based on demand from a central government enterprise Central Electronics Limited (CEL).

Ten original rickshaws have been transformed into solar hybrids with solar and manual drive.

CEL designed and manufactured 300 Watt roof panels, which they also installed on the rickshaw. Solar energy charges the panels throughout the day. When panels are 100% charged, they can power rickshaws for 2 to 4 hours without manual support.

Better Conditions for Rickshaw Drivers

The main goal is to reduce the physical demands for rickshaw pullers. They can switch to solar mode at any time during a more challenging route and save their own energy at the end of the day.

Thanks to this support, they are able to increase their incomes without costing them more physical effort. Rickshaw drivers are grateful for this opportunity.

Design

Newly designed rickshaws have safer brakes. The lower center of gravity provides sufficient rickshaw against overturning. Designers did not forget to install the high quality night lights and indicators. The seats are arranged lower, which will be appreciated by seniors.

Traditional rickshaws inherently belong to India’s narrow streets. For many families, this is the only source of income. Modernization of the traditional mode of transport provides great support to employees.

Solar energy occupies a privileged position among alternative energy sources. It is clean, environmentally friendly, and inexhaustible. Sooner or later, fossil fuel reserves will run out, so it is appropriate to focus on projects that are fueled by renewable energy sources.
